Super Six Live Blog

The end's not near, it's here.

This is the part where we're supposed to use a lot of nonsense sports cliches, I think. It all comes down to this. The best of the best. All in this together. Teamwork-sisterhood. Teamwisterhood. Lessons. Desire. Heart and grit and other terms that are ambiguous enough so as to avoid actually providing analysis or having anything to say. Montage beginning with a closeup of a sweat droplet to symbolize the hard work no one sees. Leave it all on the floor. Is that making you feel sporty and championshipy enough?

Well, tough.

Anyway, it's Super Six. So, try to enjoy it or whatever. Or actively loathe it if that's your thing. Utah fans, that's probably your thing today. We begin at 9:00 ET/6:00 PT.

LIVE SCORES

LIVE STREAMS

Here is the rotation order, along with the semifinal scores for each team on each event. Once again, the highest score of that rotation is highlighted.

Alabama ending on beam, Florida ending on bars, LSU ending on vault...everyone always gets the same order. We all remember Florida finishing on bars last year because McMurtry, and Alabama had this rotation order in 2012, 2013, and 2014. UCLA also famously had this order in...2012? The year EHH went OOB in the first rotation and that ended up being the difference for the title.

National Semifinals Live Blog

The time is now. The teams are here. The beam is angry. The only thing we have to fear is everything.

The first semifinal begins at 2:00 ET/11:00 PT, so you'll be familiar with this as the moment when you start to get weirdly nervous, like too nervous, even though you're not one of the competitors and don't even have a vested interest in one result over another. And yet you're still inexplicably freezing.

Live scores - Semifinal #2
ESPN3 stream-a-thon

By way of unnecessary repetition and...it's nationals today!...here's the rotation breakdown with team RQSs for each event. The highest score in each rotation is highlighted, i.e. the team that "should" win that rotation/gain ground there, but mostly just so that there are colors here to make it look brighter and therefore interesting.

Pacific Rim Live Blog

Because why not?

In a weekend without NCAA gymnastics, we must find some way to occupy our time, so USAG has charitably provided the Pacific Rim Championship, the Pacific Northwest's most important geographically arbitrary biennial international gymnastics competition. It's kind of a big deal, you guys.

It's the precursor to next week's Countries That Share a Border With Another Country That Has a Name Ending in Y Championship. Prestigious. Sorry, Brazil, I can't invite you because...I think you might border the Atlantic.

It's also the chance for Simone Biles to square off against Canada, Australia, and a bunch of gymnasts who are dismounting bars with a Nastia flyaway and then go, "Oh, did I win?" Yes, Simone. You won.

I love that Russia and China don't even bother sending women's teams anymore. For a while they would fake it by sending some C Teamers and Maria Kharenkova, but now they can't even bring themselves to throw a random junior at us. The Russians are far too busy fulfilling drug tests with a piece of notebook paper that says "NO MELDONIUM HERE." Done and done.

Also, in case you thought the rules of this competition dictated that teams had to send three seniors and three juniors...nope. Not anymore. Because it was really important that the US send an impossibly strong team of seniors to make sure to win this competition by 78 points. Winning by 5 points would have been so embarrassing. What is the expression, taking a gun to a knife fight? The team the US has sent to this competition is like taking a gun to a sewing circle. Put away that gun, Louisa.

To the gymnastics? Shall we?

Regionals Live Blog

It's regionals day! The one day every year where your biggest problem is the decision whether to dedicate your phone to one of the competitions streams or put that pressure on your computer with a extra browser window and risk a critical-mass rebellion. It's a really rough life. We probably need a charity. Or at least a hashtag. #prayforgymfans

Regionals headquarters with all the info is here, but these are the highlights:
4:00 ET/1:00 PT – Athens, GAScores - Stream
5:00 ET/2:00 PT – Iowa City, IAScores - Stream - Stream (vault) - Steam (bars) - Stream (beam) - Stream (floor)
5:00 ET/2:00 PT – Minneapolis, MNScores - Stream
5:00 ET/2:00 PT – Tuscaloosa, ALScores - Stream
6:00 ET/3:00 PT – Ann Arbor, MIScores - Stream
8:00 ET/5:00 PT – Salt Lake City, UTScores - Stream - Stream (vault) - Stream (bars) - Stream (beam) - Stream (floor)

After all these months, today is also the first time all season that results actually matter! Hooray! In a few short (long) hours, 36 becomes 12. Top two or bust! You know, that famous goal all athletes have. Clear eyes, full hearts, can finish second and still advance.

The hope for today is that someone, somewhere will pull off some manner of upset. After the top 12 all advanced to nationals last season, we earned something a little more fun. One teensy little meltdown doesn't seem like too much to ask. Put in your upset predictions now, so that you can be showered with praise when it happens.

The day will start slowly, which is charitable, but it will become nightmarish pretty quickly. We will invariably start missing things in hour two, when a number of the crucial bubble teams will all be on beam. Nebraska, Denver, and Cal's beam rotations will all determine quite a lot about what the #3 seeds will (or will not) have to do to score the much-anticipated upset.

Oklahoma @ UCLA Live Blog

Sunday, March 13
1:00 ET/10:00 PT – Kent State, Yale @ George Washington - SCORES
2:00 ET/11:00 PT – West Virginia @ Pittsburgh - SCORES - ESPN3
3:00 ET/12:00 PT – Utah State @ Illinois-Chicago - SCORES

5:00 ET/2:00 PT – Oklahoma @ UCLA - SCORES - TV: Pac-12
6:00 ET/3:00 PT – Air Force @ Alaska - SCORES

In case you weren't excited already, @badbebop on Twitter made this for the meet:

I know, right? People are super talented.

Now, back to resenting all of humanity...

In the early action today, George Washington was in line for a score well into the 196s but counting an 8.8 on bars drops the total down to 195.400, which is squarely in their unusable range. GW's ranking is already sort of fine, so today's meet was much more important for Kent State. The 195.275 isn't a score that will stand out, but it replaces a 193.725 road score and will shoot Kent State all the way up to a temporary ranking of #30. Exceptionally important performance. That knocks Bowling Green back down to 37th for the moment in spite of the big score yesterday. It will get interesting.

Saturday Live Blog – Georgia @ Utah; Big Five

7:00 ET/4:00 PT – Ball State @ NC State - SCORES - Stream
9:00 ET/6:00 PT – Denver, Seattle Pacific @ Washington - SCORES - Stream

Getting started early today with the first of two Big Five qualifying meets. The one that's on TV. The other one isn't. Earlier, I said BTN was dumb. Turns out, I'm dumb. I thought BTN was showing an old meet between Nebraska and Penn State after this instead of the second Big Five meet, but they're actually showing a men's meet between Nebraska and Penn State. Which is also tape delayed. So not better. And in my defense...

Week 9 rankings

Welp, the final weekend of the regular season means a whole heap of senior nights/days, which in turn means a whole heap of 10s. Let's all admit that 90% of the reason we're watching Florida/North Carolina is to see how crazy the scores are and whether Bridgey gets a 10 on floor.

While thinking about 10s, I just spruced up the Hall of 10s a little bit, adding videos for this season's 10s (thanks NastiaFan101!), making sure all the home/away/location designations were there, and adding a couple more years through the diligent work of my garbage brain and scouring RTN. If you notice omissions, of which there are definitely plenty, please let me know. Ideally, I'll keep going back and adding more years. Probably until 2004, because it would take a whole year just to write up all the 2004 10s.

4:00 ET/1:00 PT – Michigan State @ Boise State - SCORES - Stream
5:00 ET/2:00 PT – UC Davis, Brown @ San Jose State - SCORES - Stream

These are the current live rankings heading into today's action, emphasizing the urgency to get a useful score for a number of the teams competing this afternoon. I've been obsessing over the potential regional excitement that will come from having some of these schools as #3 seeds, without taking too seriously the possibility that they could end up out of the top 18 and out of the seeded schools altogether. Without a meet next weekend, Stanford's situation is particularly urgent. Utah would also prefer Stanford get a big score, like now, because if Stanford does have to be "regionally allocated," then Utah's regional is by far the closest geographically.

Nebraska's RQS is being held down by a low road score, so we won't really know where the Huskers stand until after next weekend's meet at Ohio State.

Don't worry, just everyone is competing tonight.

Pac-12 day! Scoring should be interesting. SEC scoring went on a bender last night, particularly in the Florida meet, highlighted by that time one judge gave McMurtry a 9.950 for a Yfull that she didn't stick.

The big day! Eight of the top ten teams are in action, most of them against each other. We're late enough in the regular season now for this to feel like the first postseason preview, where we'll get a borderline realistic sense of how these matchups might go come April. Of course, with a number of big SEC duels and many of the top teams competing at home, we're going to have to conduct a 10.0 pool. Pick five people competing today whom you think will get a 10 from at least one judge, and the winner gets the grand prize of self-righteously rolling your eyes to the next galaxy while going, "I can't even..."

10:15 ET/7:15 PT – Winter Cuppity Cup Cup Cup – SCORES/STREAM

Joyful times to be had by all! Until we get to Georgia on beam. Then...we'll see. The main focus of the day will be everything, but mostly Oklahoma and Georgia because I'm fascinated to see those two up against each other. I don't think it's going to be the cakewalk for Oklahoma it might seem based on most previous scores, so that's obviously the kiss of death. Enjoy reading that sentence after Oklahoma wins by three points.

First eye goes on that meet. Second eye on Utah and Stanford because that's now an urgent scoring assignment for Stanford. Remaining eyes on Iowa's scores and the "who's fourth-best in this conference" showdown between OSU and Cal. Oh, and Alabama! Too much!

Also, why you should be a fan of Kaytianna McMillan.

"That was a good sentence. We have like maybe two."

And then tonight, the elite boys get their Winter Cup on, which is always a treat. It's like gymnastics, but where everyone falls on everything. It's really fun. You'll like it a lot.

Saturday Live Blog – [5] LSU @ [11] Georgia; Washington @ [6] Utah; [16] Oregon State @ [7] UCLA

A big day! I'll keep this blog going throughout, sort of like mini-regionals, so just keep scrolling through the mass of ramblings as the day progresses.

Saturday, February 13
4:00 ET/1:00 PT – [5] LSU @ [11] Georgia - SCORES - SECN
4:00 ET/1:00 PT – Penn State @ [23] Ohio State - SCORES - Stream($)
5:00 ET/2:00 PT – Iowa @ [20] Illinois - SCORES
7:00 ET/4:00 PT – Southern Connecticut @ [22] New Hampshire - SCORES
9:00 ET/6:00 PT – Washington @ [6] Utah - SCORES - Pac-12
9:00 ET/6:00 PT – [13] Stanford @ Arizona - SCORES - Pac-12 (Arizona/Bay Area)
11:00 ET/8:00 PT – [16] Oregon State @ [7] UCLA - SCORES - Pac-12

In the rankings fight, LSU will find it challenging to move up at all based on today's performance, needing a 197.900 to ahead ahead of Alabama. In RQS, there's still plenty of time to get scores and LSU has four road meets remaining including this one, but with only one vaguely usable road score on the resume so far, a big number today would do a lot to solidify that ranking.

Saturday Live Blog – Utah @ UCLA

SCORES
Pac-12 Net
4:00 ET/1:00 PT

Ah, Utah and UCLA. One of my favorites. The unfortunate aspect of this rivalry over the last three seasons has been the road team throwing up an utter catastrophe on bars in the first rotation, deciding the meet and dulling any kind of competitive excitement after about three minutes of gymnastics before anyone has time to get interested. This is supposed be a close, back-and-forth affair (it's Utah and UCLA), but we haven't had that for a while, so...here's hoping. No one is allowed to have a catastrophe until at least beam.

Today's pre-meet discussion topic is Angi Cipra's floor routine, which now that we've seen it four or five times, is taking on a new identity where the theme is the continued emotional bullying of Angi Cipra. Why do people keep hanging up on her so much? Prank calls are just mean, you guys. Does she have no friends? Do we have a clique problem at this school? She keeps being like, "Who's calling me?????" and every time the whole team is like, "I don't know..." Dicks. Don't worry, Angi. It gets better.

Another Friday, another batch of exciting SEC meets. The real question is, now that the 10s have started flying again, who's getting the first 10 of the Florida/Georgia meet: Brandie Jay on vault or Bridget Sloan on bars? Or will Sloan beat the odds and get a pre-meet 10 for just being so great.

Metroplex Live Blog

It's Metroplex! 8:00 ET/5:00 PT, streamed on Aunt Flogymnastics for those who have signed up for the arm-and-a-leg subscription. For those who haven't, let me be your guide. There are no windows and no doors.

Five teams compete tonight (Oklahoma, LSU, Stanford, Missouri, Washington) because nothing says compelling entertainment like a bye. If there's one thing sports fans love, it's when their favorite team just leaves for a while. They go crazy for it.

Obviously, the judges will have viewed the excessively baroque scoring from the Florida meet last night as a challenge. Do I hear four 10s per team? Everyone is a perfect star! Who wants a juice box and a hug?
